Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer, a rationalist and constructor for social equality, designed the extension of Barcelona called the Eixample. The originality of his vision of the modern city stems from his notions about the major impact of new transport systems. Another aspect that shapes his innovative ideas on town planning is his concern for the living conditions of the working class. Indeed, his “Statistical Monograph on Barcelona’s Working Class in 1856” is unique in this respect.
