Carles Ibāņez i Ibāņez de Ibero was the architect of work on systematic geodesy in Spain. He directed highly precise triangulations, such as that of the Mulhacén peak, which earned him international acknowledgement. His task as the director of the Statistical and Geographical Institute between 1870 and 1889 led to the publication of the National Topographical Map, which was prepared on the basis of his expert knowledge and thanks to his organisational endeavours. Under his direction the institute published 69 pages of a map that was deemed essential by the administration at the start of the 19th century.
