Saint George's Day in the world
Catalan centres
Rodoreda Year In November 1995 the UNESCO declared April 23rd to be World Book and Copyright Day. This date was chosen because, among other reasons, the festival of Sant Jordi is celebrated in Catalonia. Over the last few years, this declaration has made April 23rd a point of reference for books around the world.
Catalan cultural centres organize many activities to celebrate the festival of the Patron Saint of Catalonia. On April 9th, 1999 the day of Sant Jordi was declared 'Dia Internacional de la Catalunya Exterior' by the Generalitat with the aim to remind Catalans who live abroad of the occasion. The festival is held on the first Sunday after April 23rd.
Saint George's Day is not only celebrated in Catalonia: it is a festival exported all over the world. Every year, Catalan centres form the point of contact between Catalan and foreign cultures, with a large number of activities, such as special editions of books, interviews, parties, street festivals, book and rose stalls, readings, concerts and even the holding of Jocs Florals (cultural contests). Cities like Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, Zurich or Buenos Aires join in these initiatives.
