Sweden will be a display case for traditional Catalan culture
The Association for the Dissemination of Folklore (L'Associació per a la difusió del folklore - ADIFOLK) is staging the 19th Sardana-dance Gathering and Display of Folk Groups in Malmö (Sweden) to raise awareness of the nature and variety of Catalonia's folk culture. The exhibition, which will be held on 5th and 6th August, will act as a window on the folklore of Catalonia for Scandinavian countries. In fact, Malmö is also a port for people bound for Denmark, since it is close to Copenhagen and, indeed, many Danes live there.
Groups of sardana dancers, capgrossos (large-headed gnomes), castells (human towers) and gegants (giants) will be among the participants in this gathering, bringing together over twenty cultural associations. Ever since 1988, this display has been bringing together a broad and very diverse array and is highly spontaneous and participatory in nature, reflecting Catalan society. As ADIFOLK puts it, "we want this to be seen as a message from a people that cherishes its traditions while also being resolutely committed to Europe".
The Presidential Department, through the Support Programme for Catalan Communities Abroad (CCAs), is contributing 8,000 euros to organising and running this year's event. At the same time, the number of acts in this event is growing, in the form of sardana and other folk groups, deploying all their creativity with fresh enthusiasm.
L'Aplec Internacional de la Sardana (the International Sardana Gathering) was launched in 1988 in Amsterdam. Since then, this event has been held in cities such as Paris, Brussels, Florence, Copenhagen, Manchester and Lisbon, among others.
