
Born in Mollet del Vallès in November 1954 into a country family with a long Republican tradition involved in the fight against the Franco government. She is the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of democratically elected mayors of Mollet. She was clandestinely active when she was 16.
She holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona. She was a practising nurse at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona and director of the Hospital Comarcal in Palamós, and is a specialist in health management.
She was mayoress of Mollet from 1987 to 21 December 2003. She is currently national secretary for the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya and member of the National Executive Commission. She was a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia between 1995 and January 2004.
She was minister of Home Affairs between December 2003 and 28 November 2006.
She has two daughters.
