In the times of the Mancomunitat (Commonwealth) of Catalonia (1914-1923), body that was housed in the Palau and brought together the four Catalan Deputations under the presidency of Prat de la Riba and of Puig i Cadafalch, the restoration of the Palau was initiated, in order to return it to its former splendour.

Later, its artistic wealth has been enhanced with works by major contemporary Catalan artists.

Among many others, the most notable include the paintings of Joaquim Torres-Garcia (1912-1916), in the room that bears his name; the bust of Enric Prat de la Riba, by Joan Borrell (1918), in the Pati dels Tarongers; the paintings of Montserrat Gudiol (1974), of Jordi Alumā (1976, in the former Exchequer Archive) and of Antoni Tāpies (1989, in the Government meeting-room); Frederic Marčs’ bronze sculpture of St. George (1976, in the Salķ de Sant Jordi); the relief by J. M. Subirachs (1976) at the entrance to the Neo-gothic bridge that links the Palau with the residence of the president of the Generalitat or the Casa dels Canonges; and the busts of Presidents Francesc Maciā (1983) and Lluís Companys (1990), by the same sculptor.
