The Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) is the main public provider of health services in Catalonia. The ICS is a pioneer in its three basic lines of activity: Health Care (the main of them), Research and Teaching.
- • Health care: the ICS delivers health services for 83% Catalan citizens (which means more than 5'5 millions of people)
- • Research: it covers 40% of health research in Catalonia (more than 1.000 publications in national and international reviews)
- • Teaching: undergraduate and post-graduate training supplies 56% of the medicine graduates and 66% of the specialists trained in Catalonia: more than 1,500 MIR (interns) are trained in ICS centres and more than 4,300 under-graduates: 2,300 in medicine and 2,000 in nursing.
The ICS is composed of 8 Hospitals and 470 Primary Care Units located along the whole catalan territory.
The ICS' hospitals offer 32% of the beds that are available at Catalan Public Hospital Network (XHUP) and 3 of the five high technology hospitals in Catalonia are from the ICS (Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge and Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol de Badalona).
The Primary Care Units consist of Primary Care teams, Urgency services, Permanent Assistance Centres, Sexual and Reproduction health, Mental health Services, Image diagnostic Services, etc.

The ICS' budget to 2006 is 2.300 millions of euros, a 6'8% growth from last year. This budget is approved on a yearly basis by the Parliament of Catalonia.
The ICS carry out more than 50 millions health-care interventions:

- • Length of stay: 7?5 days
- • More than 100.000 surgical activity
- • More than 800.000 emergencies
