Coexistence problems inside and outside the school

The edition 2005-06 of the Inquiry for school coexistence and security in Catalonia (ECESC) has been taken forth by resolution of the Parliament of Catalonia with the purpose of valuing the evolution of coexistence problems and the victimization among the school population.

In agreement with this parliamentary mandate, the Department of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Institutional Relations and Participation have performed a study which allows for comparison of the data obtained in a study of the 2000-2001 course, with the corresponding data from the 2005-2006 course, taking into consideration, however, that this comparison is limited to the secondary education, since the 2000-2001 course was exclusively directed to this type of student population (aged between 12 to 18 years old), while the latest edition of the ECESC approached the coexistence problems from the medium cycle of primary education to the completion of secondary education (aged between 8 to 18 years old). Nevertheless, the inquiry in primary education has been focused on the coexistence problems inside the school, while in the secondary education has approached other problematic, like typical victimization, infractions recognized by the students themselves or drug consumption, which go beyond the school frame and can be produced bothinside and outside the teaching centres.

The ECESC’s sample was made of 10,414 students in 199 educational centres, public and private, from all over Catalonia. According to the schooling level, the distribution was of 4,951 primary education students and 5,463 secondary education students.
