The 2008 call and participation rules for the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology were approved by Agreement of the Management Board on 25 March 2008.
The main aim of the Prize is to recognise an exceptional scientific career or discovery in the field of ecology or other environmental science that has contributed to: significant progress in environmental knowledge or in scientific thought and knowledge, or to the development of theoretical approaches for the sound management of natural resources, or use of the land and sea.
The Prize may be awarded to living individuals (the Prize is not awarded posthumously), or to legal entities or groups from anywhere in the world that, through their scientific career and teaching, thought, creativity, innovation and discoveries, have contributed to the significant development of ecological sciences, as well as to conceptual advancement and its application aimed at the sustainable management of natural resources, or use of the land and sea.
The candidatures must be presented by competent, qualified representatives of universities, schools of higher learning, research centres, academies of science or their scientific subsidiaries, or by persons who have been awarded the Prize in previous years or who have been members of the Jury of the Prize.
The candidatures must be accompanied by a letter or note specifying the reasoned justification, be signed by the person presenting the candidature and include a curriculum vitae. They must be presented before 30 June and should be sent to the Technical Secretariat of the Ramon Margalef Prize, Presidential Department of the Generalitat of Catalonia. Its content may be sent beforehand by e-mail to the Prize Secretariat at prm@gencat.cat or by means of the form available on the Prize web site, www.gencat.cat/premiramonmargalef.
The Prize is worth one hundred thousand (100,000) euros and a prize, a unique piece in Memory of Ramon Margalef.
Annual
The Jury, assisted with voice but not vote by the Technical Secretary of the Prize, will choose the winning candidature by majority vote. The Jury's decision is final.
The Management Board will announce the winner of the Prize.
The formal presentation of the Prize will take place in Barcelona. Furthermore, a formal academic ceremony will be held for the scientific community.
